Harvest SA – The youth are an important part of agriculture!

Harvest SA is South Africa’s interactive digital agriculture publication, we were proud to feature in the July/August issue, take a look at our advert below or click through to the magazine HERE.

Highlights of the July/August issue include the following:

Our sugar feature, courtesy of Illovo and SA Canegrowers, tells the heart-warming tale of how the sugar industry is gearing up to put women and youth first. This translates into tremendous opportunities for rural communities. In a potatoes update, small-scale farmers can learn from the ARC how to grow with minimal inputs for maximum profit. In our banana feature, you can learn how to apply the basics of banana cultivation for more profit and success, while a technical article fills you in on how to give those trees the right nutrition to produce the best herbs. Yes, technically, bananas are herbs, not fruit. Other technical articles in this issue address foliar feeding, irrigation, and social responsibility, among others. Moving onto the policy plane, Agri SA considers what is the best approach to land reform, while Vumelana insists that land reform efforts are doomed unless the youth are properly involved. With regard to investment, Futuregrowth shares how sustainability is an ever increasingly important consideration for investors. In other words, agri-business needs to look at reducing its carbon footprint to attract investors in the future. Fortunately, there are solutions out there. Find out more in a case study of a macadamia nut farm that switched to solar in this issue of Harvest SA.

As we self isolate, we should not forget that agriculture remains central to the world economy. It is therefore important to continue to share, collaborate and inspire – the show must go on! For this reason, the African Agri Council are hosting the Market Access Africa 2021 on 9-10 September 2021, as a free to attend hybrid event. The meeting will feature various high level discussions, closed sessions, and an expert value chain connect team to pre-schedule and facilitate meetings for all the participants.

Our youth are our future, they need to be nurtured and be a part of the conversations. The world will be theirs to be cared for, have sustainable methods of cultivating food and the use of sustainable energy. We need them to achieve these goals.
